Consumers reported feeling guilty, annoyed, frustrated, or indifferent when buying products in plastic packaging. However, they feel happy, reassured, relieved, healthy, and safe when buying products with sustainable packaging.

Companies Have an Opportunity

When asked who should be most responsible for reducing plastic waste, 50% of respondents said companies who produce and/or grow goods, followed by national and local governments (21%), individuals (15%) and grocery stores (13%). For brands that make sustainable choices:

63% Of consumers are willing to pay more for products and services if they help protect the environment.
68% Are more likely to choose a brand, store or restaurant that uses sustainable packaging.
65% Would switch grocery stores if they knew the store was committed to sustainable packaging.
Consumer Thoughts

COVID-19 Has Changed Consumer Attitudes

The pandemic has changed attitudes about sustainability, with 67% of respondents saying the pandemic has made them more aware of the effect humans have on the planet’s ecosystem, and 50% of respondents say they are more concerned about plastic packaging than before COVID-19.
