THE SCIENCE BEHIND OUR SOLUTIONS
Plant-based fiber solutions that help the planet
Our team works tirelessly to innovate, design and manufacture plant-based solutions that reduce CO2 emissions, prevent plastic pollution, and keep harmful chemicals out of our bodies, landfills and waterways.
We create sustainable technologies that meet consumer needs
We’re working towards a healthier future.
With Footprint’s breakthrough innovations, we can build products that replace disposable plastics while meeting market demands for reliable, affordable alternatives to fossil fuel packaging.

Why plastic poses an
urgent crisis
- Plastic pollution goes hand-in-hand with the climate crisis, as the vast majority of plastic is created from fossil fuels.
- Millions of tons of plastic ends up in landfills and oceans, where it will not break down for centuries.
- Less than 9% of plastic is actually recycled. We can’t recycle our way out of the plastic pollution crisis.
- Plastic containers also contain toxic chemicals that can leach into your food.
- Studies have linked the chemicals used in plastic with severe adverse health outcomes.
- Because every sector of manufacturing involves plastics, we need quality bio-based alternatives that can be produced cost-effectively, at scale.
How it works
We’re discovering, testing, building, manufacturing, and commercializing a wide range of patented and proprietary bio-based designs at a price point comparable to plastic.
1. Innovate
Creating products that do the job of plastic minus the harms of plastic requires brand-new technology.
2. Develop
Footprint designs solutions to be compostable, recyclable, eliminating harmful forever chemicals.
3. Manufacture
Footprint not only designs and develops, but we manufacture and produce all of our solutions.

INNOVATE
Innovating new technologies for a post-plastic world.
Finding sustainable alternatives to plastic requires brand-new modalities.
The plastic problem has been difficult to solve because plastic is not easy to replace. It’s cheap, lightweight and extremely durable. Plastic protects food and extends its shelf life. Finding a material that matches plastic’s strength and low cost is challenging—it has to be sturdy enough to hold up during shipping and prevent food losses, but then able to biodegrade when we’re done with it.

DEVELOP
We set out to design technologies that do not exist yet.
We’ve created the only plastic-free solution that replaces rigid plastics while offering extended barrier properties. To accomplish this goal, we built an entire technology value chain. Every step of that chain is in-house, which lets us guarantee quality, scale, and the flexibility to rapidly innovate and optimize.
